Joel Metschke—CoCreative Parent Coach
Connect • Communicate • Structure • Support
Hey there, I’m Joel from CoCreative Parent Coaching. I’m so glad you’re here and I’m excited to talk parenting and family life with you!
Listen, I get it, modern day parenting can be rough! Shifting norms and expectations, distance from extended family, inconsistent or even contradictory recommendations from supposed “experts,” and simply not enough hours in the day for all the demands on your and your family’s time.
Maybe you’ve felt these pressures, too? In my work with parents, I’ve found that these challenges often compound and build up, leaving otherwise successful and effective individuals feeling unsure, confused, and frustrated in their most important role—as father or mother to their incredible one-of-a-kind child(ren).
I developed CoCreative Coaching to help parents bridge the gap between where they are now and where they want to be with their kids. The CoCreative Coaching process unfolds as we explore the challenges you are facing, build a picture of your family’s unique identity and situation, and experiment together with new strategies and approaches that will get you more of what you want.
Connect—Reengage with your kids. Know what’s going on in their lives. Feel that sense of warm connection and relationship. Be the meaningful presence in their lives that you know you can be.
Communicate—Reopen lines of communication. Talk in ways that your child will be able to hear and act on. Really listen to what your child/partner is saying, or not saying! Move beyond arguments and get to the heart of the matter.
Structure—Establish routines, expectations, and agreements that will actually stick. Find strategies for getting out the door, heading to bed, completing chores and homework, or limiting screen time that will have you nagging less, get you beyond bribery and threat cycles, and leave you with more space to enjoy your time together.
Support—Help your child be more of who they are. Give them the tools they need to manage emotions, explore their identity, take initiative, and find their own version of success in whatever pursuits feel most meaningful to them.
About Me
I live in Seattle with my husband, surrounded by amazing hiking, kayaking, gourmet food, craft breweries, and wineries. As you might guess, I love meeting clients at local coffee shops, but I also enjoy making a cup of coffee at home and jumping on a video call with parents from around the world.
Child/teen growth and development continues to fascinate and inspire me. Although we don’t have any kids of our own, I have had the pleasure of spending my entire career working directly with children, families, and educators. For over a decade, I taught in early childhood classrooms and after-school programs, focusing on learning through play, social-emotional development, and anti-bias/anti-racism work. Now, I use my experiences and skills to partner one-on-one with parents through CoCreative Parent Coaching.
You’ve probably experienced a partnership like this before, working together with one of your child’s favorite teachers. In a similar way, let’s combine my years of experience in child development, family systems, and growth and change processes with your deep and intuitive understanding of who your child is and what they need most. We’ll work together to reflect on your situation, consider possibilities, center your family’s values and strengths, and identify the innovative action steps that will get you and your family from where you are now to where you want (and need) to be tomorrow.
