The PCI Send to Friend
Parent Express Ezine
Nov
2009
Welcome to Parent Express, the PCI™ e-zine! Here you will find updates on the Parent Coaching Institute, along with ideas and practical tips for the parenting journey.

The holidays are around the corner with thoughts of gift giving on our minds. My favorite gift to give is a book. Always has been…always will be. In these days of Kindle, Sony Reader, etc., my loved ones appreciate real books more than ever, those page turners to hold onto—not only while reading—but over a lifetime as well. Books are friends and companions at our house as the many book shelves throughout indicate!

This year the PCI™ is making it a fun project for you to order books from a beloved Seattle book seller, Elliott Bay Book Company. Rather than going to the "big guys," we urge you to order your books through Elliott Bay. When you do, not only are you supporting a small, legendary bookstore, you also support the PCI™ as well. Elliott Bay Book Company is donating 10% of book orders received from November 13 through December 11 to our work here at the PCI™. If you are interested in joining us in this worthwhile project, please see the side-bar in this issue for more information. There you will find a link to a flyer which you can share with your friends and relatives. The rules for this National Bookfair are simple:

  • Order books directly through Elliott Bay Book Company by e-mailing kmallman@elliottbaybook.com or calling toll free (800) 962-5311 and asking for Karen.
  • Let them know you are a "PCI Friend." (The PCI™ does not receive a percentage of sales from the Web site.) But by calling or e-mailing your book list, you really have a personal shopper for your holiday book giving! Fun!

I love to support the "little guy" in this age of mega corporations. This type of action moves us all toward that "personally-generated culture" I talk about in Parenting Well in a Media Age.

Elliott Bay does so much for the Seattle community. Let's all show our appreciation by pouring in book orders to them from all over the nation!

Wishing you and your families a wonderful, peace-filled, and joyous holiday season.

Gloria DeGaetano, Founder and CEO

P.S.: Parent Express will take its usual holiday break in December… see you in January!

"…My training as a Parent Coach through the PCI set in motion for me a radically invigorating process of professional renewal and personal transformation. I continue to be inspired by the marvelous synthesis of theories, ideas, resources, and practical strategies that characterize the PCI coaching model and render it so effective in working with parents today. I received everything I needed to create my own coaching practice and to coach well. No detail was missed and the opportunities for continuing support and development from the PCI are unparalleled…"

Intentional Parenting
Practical Planning for Productive Results

Connie Hammer

Expecting your first child is a very exciting time in your life that comes with an assortment of ideas to ponder, topics to discuss, and decisions to make. As a first time parent, you may find yourself overwhelmed by all the alternatives presented to you. Choosing the color for the baby's room, deciding between cloth and disposable diapers, finding a doula, or selecting a name are just a few of the items that might be on your to-do list. It is important to remember, however, that much of the preparation and planning that needs to be addressed goes beyond nursery colors or breast feeding versus the bottle.

Some of the most important decisions about becoming a parent are often overlooked until they are staring you right in the face. Before that stork arrives, have you seriously considered what type of parent you want to be and what type of child you want to raise? Besides being a patient mom or a caring dad who brings up a healthy and happy child, what more do you want for your emerging family? Most of us fall into parenting by default, relying on our intuition and the role modeling we received from our own parents. Having arrived at parenting with no further training than this, the majority of first time parents function rather well at their job. Asking yourself what kind of job performance you want to achieve as a parent before starting the position, as well as what kind of product you want to produce, will reap many benefits. Reaching beyond adequate to your optimal best requires a mindset that is intentional, a conscious and deliberate approach to raising your child thoughtfully. Taking the time to truly examine how you want to parent carries the added benefit of alleviating some of the anxiety that exists for most soon-to-be parents. Giving your approach to parenting some careful forethought will facilitate a more comfortable and effortless glide into parenthood.

Have you ever purchased a tree? Once acquired, you plant it with the knowledge that you will be responsible for its care until it matures. You recognize that as long as you meet its basic need for water, sunshine and fertilizer, it will grow into a tall, strong adult. If, on the other hand, you acquire the same tree with a very special vision for its adult years, you are inclined to be more intentional about purchasing, planting, and nurturing it. You would not only provide for the tree's basic necessities, but your approach would be more attentive and deliberate about the environment it was to inhabit.

Please Put Down the Remote and Pick Up the Children's Books

by Barb Bushey
PCI Certified Parent Coach®

As parents, we have long known the benefits of reading to our children. In this day and age with media bombarding us at every turn, reading to our children is even more important than when we were growing up.

A few of the academic benefits for your children when we read to them are: helping to build their vocabularies, both reading and speaking; improving and developing reading skills such as rhyming words, letter sounds, left to right progression, and sequencing; and assisting in developing a life-long love of reading. We need to read to our children for the sheer enjoyment of sharing stories.

I believe all of the benefits stated above are important, but even more important are the life skills our children learn when being read to by parents or caring adults. Reading fosters the development of a positive relationship between parent and child. Socially, emotionally and academically, it is far better for the child to be interacting with a person and a book than sitting in front of an emotionless, nonresponsive screen. Reading to our children provides them the opportunity to develop a better understanding of their emotions and feelings when relating to the characters in the story. Story time gives your children a safe place and time to ask questions. Stories open opportunities for your children to develop their imagination and creativity. Story time is a time when parents can teach family values and assist their children with difficulties the children may be experiencing in developing these values.
