Parenting is the most important and challenging job any parent will have. The parents featured in Parent Success Stories are like many parents today who face growing challenges and feel frustrated by their unrealized dreams for their families. In Parent Success Stories, Dulcie Gretton, PCI Certified Parent Coach® in Calgary, Alberta, recalls the story of "Carly," a forty-something mother of six children, including a teenager with ADHD. "Carly" hoped, through parent coaching, to "move forward and beyond the persistent cycle of intense bursts of energy followed by exhaustion." Dulcie wrote, "I took great care to look for and amplify the things that were working in 'Carly's' life and the significant personal strengths that were in evidence." Through parent coaching and its many discoveries, the setting aside of guilt and fear from past parenting experiences, the identification of her deep desires for her family, and journaling, "(Carly) volunteered that she was happy to get up most mornings—a very unusual experience for her."
Alice Hanscam, PCI Certified Parent Coach® in Anchorage, Alaska, recalls the story of "Mike" and "Laura" who were frustrated with their four-year-old daughter's confrontational behavior causing "Laura" to wake each morning "ready for a fight." Alice was able to "clarify for them the needs of four-year-olds: expanded competence and increased autonomy." Through parent coaching sessions with Alice, "Mike" and "Laura" realized the importance of giving their daughter more independence, while at the same time providing more focused time with their daughter. With these changes, the parents became more relaxed, their daughter became more agreeable and more likely to play independently at times, and their family life and marriage were strengthened.
